Zambia featured in Tatler 2009 Spa Guide

Having put aside some me time. Sat back and nestled between the comfort of some fluffy cushions I opened the Tatler 2009 Spa Guide, to take me away into another world of dreams, to find some magical place to tantalize and draw me towards…

image image image

I found myself  thrilled to find listed amongst the best spa’s in the world according to Tatler, Zambia’s Royal Zambezi Lodge. Wow this is a serious list! One you pay attention to, where you know you will find only the most amazing, luxurious places around the world to visit to get pampered and enjoy stunning surroundings in exclusive locations receiving seamless service and not forgetting delectable food.

So what did Tatler have to say about Royal Zambezi Lodge?

Tatler 2009 Spa Guide: “You only have to look at the rugged men in muddy shoes to figure out that this is no ordinary spa hotel, but it’s the only place in the wilds of Zambia that vaguely resembles one – hence its allure. Just the setting will thrill you: purply mountains that wobble in the midday heat haze; a fat, meandering river; and most of the creatures of Noah’s Ark. The open-sided thatched spa is built high on the riverbank, hung with white muslin curtains, and has a hot-tub, mini steam room and therapies ranging from traditional Zambian massages (so restorative they were originally given to local women post childbirth) to a men’s manicure – kind of fun after a week of mucking about in the bush“.

In the words of Melinda Stevens and Daisy Finer reporting for Tatler. “Now, more than ever, we need free time to count. We rush from work to parties, from meetings to dinner, eating too fast, drinking too much and staying up way too late. Then we look at ourselves in the mirror and wonder why people twice our age look half as young. So how do we feel better amidst the hullabaloo? … To read more click in and discover the best spas, clinics, retreats and boot camps in the world, Tatler 2009 Spa Guide.

Tatler is part of the Conde Nast Group of Magazines which includes publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, CN Traveller, GQ and more …

I do hope I get the opportunity to experience some time out at the Royal Zambezi Lodge, it’s a definite on my list!

Relaxation in our busy lives is necessary, find time for you while in Zambia, we at www.thebestofzambia.com also recommend you consider a visit to the below listed, click in to view.

Lusaka Animal Welfare Society – an insight into their fab work

Lusaka Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is a registered charity founded in 1994 for the care, treatment, rehabilitation and re-homing of the Greater Lusaka area’s many domestic animals, especially dogs and cats. Many of the animals they rescue have been starved, abused or abandoned through no fault of their own. LAWS do a fantastic job caring for the vulnerable or forgotten animals within Lusaka and Lusaka Animal Welfare Society is THE only animal welfare society in Zambia!

This year LAWS in conjunction with University of Zambia, Veterinary department carried out a FREE mass vaccination campaign! Over the course of this year, 5 campaigns were carried out reaching the poor compound areas within Lusaka to help dog owners on low or no income. They travelled with a group of Veterinary students from the University of Zambia. Alongside this, LAWS had their first ever mobile vet clinic, where over 600 dogs and puppies were de-wormed, dipped for fleas and ticks, and taken away for specialized treatment if required.

vet blog useTo add to all this great work, they were joined by Dr Luke Gamble from the Worldwide Veterinary Services a UK based Charity who support LAWS as a member charity and a UK film crew from Red Earth Studio. Worldwide Veterinary Services were filming this as part of their documentary of Luke’s travels to animal welfare groups around the world. This documentary will cover 10 episodes and Zambia will feature in episode 6. It will be shown globally on Sky 1 and Sky HD and it starts just before this Christmas in the UK!

LAWS have plans to vaccinate 10,000 animals in 2010, but will need help with funding for this mammoth task. To find out more, get in touchwith LAWS and subscribe to their newsletter for updates on what they are getting up to.

You must read Dr Luke Gamble’s blog on his travels through Zambia – a great insight into an individual’s experience and perspective of Zambia!  You can also find out more about the work done by Worldwide Veterinary Services by becoming a member.

The work done by these amazing, dedicated people is worth our support!

Rhythms, beats and song at Munda Wanga

munda wanga

Munda Wanga is a well known botanical garden, wildlife park and sanctuary in Zambia. Days out here are a favourite memory from my childhood!

An up and coming event called Music in the Park caught my attention because I’m a fan of music, art and culture and believe more events like this should happen more frequently. They inspire, inform and bring people together – what could be better?

National and international musicians will perform a range of music. Some of the named performers are VOX Zambezi (taking traditional African rhythms and beats to the stage), Nomakanjani (performing traditional drum and dance) and The Elevators (offering a Jazz extravaganza featuring Zambian artists).

The setting couldn’t be better – the relaxing botanical gardens at Munda Wanga. The atmosphere the organisers want to create is one of inspiration and creativity. This is the place and event for cultural inspiration.

As if that wasn’t enough there will also be an art exhibition hosted by Kachere Art Gallery, featuring paintings from the Lungu Brothers, Jeff and Jim, as well as paintings from Lawrence MacTribouy – Zambian artists who recently featured at the Fresh Paint Gallery in Cape Town.

There will also be wine and cheese tasting and activities to entertain the children.

Date: 20th September
Time: 12.00 – 18.00 hours (12-6 pm)
Entry fee: ZMK50,000 (includes entry to the rest of the park)

Rafting the ‘fiercest river in the world’

raftingCommercial rafting first began on the Zambezi River in 1981. Since then it’s grown in popularity and now a rafting trip on the Zambezi is a regular feature in many an itinerary. Rafting on the Zambezi is now internationally recognised as the best you can get. This was confirmed with the recent Lucozade Energy Challenge – ‘rafting on the fiercest river in the world’!

The Gorge is very steep so you won’t see much wildlife on a rafting trip but occasionally you will see klipspringer, rock hyrax, vervet monkeys and baboons. What you will note is that the birdlife is far more spectacular – black eagles, augur buzzards, black storks, pied and giant kingfishers and red winged starlings are just some of the birds you’ll probably see. You may even spot the very rare Taita Falcon! A common question is whether there are crocodiles in the river – interestingly, the answer is yes, but they are very small because the rafting area is quite unsuitable for their habitation!
